yo ho ho ... work work work

we found a second job!!! finally after sooooo many disappointment and failures. what’s is the job about? Room attendant. ha ha ha. hope we can get a third which is a evening job~ not that we are money crazy but the second job is one room attendee job shared by three of us. coz the work days & time are fixed and we can only do it when we have off days (and yes we calculated that we gonna have at least two off per week) so by combining the power of three we can clinch this job.

i’m pretty burnt out now though its only 2115. been working for three consecutive days and tomorrow will be my fourth. aching~ well i asked for it, coz i wanted to increase my work hours for this month as my previous week work hours were low.

oh ya, i haven't checked my year 2 semester 2 result~ damn it. hope it wouldn't spoil my next off day...

our food entry

for record purpose and for pops & moms to know we are healthy & well, these are the food we cooked:

CARROT SOUP (the CHI-NA style)
we actually went to the Three Beards grocery mart here and bought pork ribs, carrot, tomatoes and onions (pam got them later coz we forgot to buy during the first trip) to cook a healthy clear hot broth coz we miss the nice clear soup. simmered the soup for a good 3 hrs and BOY! does it taste DELICIOUS~! (glad the onions removed the weird pork-y smell)

INSTANT KNOW RICE WITH SCRAMBLE EGGS & SPAM
wanted to eat rice (yes after all we are all still chinese rice buckets) so we got the cheapest rice with flavouring and boiled it. the egg & spam was an add-on by me, coz i miss eating eggs so in the midist of cooking the rice i cycle out to buy the egg & spam. eggs is a very expansive produce, about USD3 for half a dozen, so i bought cheap substitute eggs instead.

HOT CHOCOLATE DRINK
okay.. this isn’t in anyway cooking anything, its just boiling hot water and pouring it into a packet of Swiss Miss. but the hidden agenda behind telling you this is because Swiss Miss is like dirt cheap here, a dime per packet (equivalent to S$0.13) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (yes we’ll control the amount of drinkin’ quantity, coz we are afraid of going home as a BALL)

yeah, that’s all we cooked. don’t you say that it’s little, we’ve to work till 1630 you know~! :)

tata.

NoWhere

Ten thousand miles away from home.
Just 2 weeks in Tok and we’ve gotten used to the routine of trying to meet quota, eat well and sleep even better kind of lifestyle. Here i’m known as P.K. and that suits me fine. Like how a friend was saying that the best time to change is when you arrive at some place new where almost no one knows about you, or well, at most one or two tops. That’s when people take you as who you behave then. It’s like having a second chance to make first impression. then again, that’s with a different group of people, but oh well, guess there’s always two sides to a coin. Seriously, i (still) can’t believe i’m in it. The Positively outrageous service guy was saying that we do things either because 1) we feel good when we do it or 2) we are going to feel bad if we don’t do it. so right now i’m still thinking if i’m in this cause i am hoping that things will turn out fine so i’ll feel good, or that i am going to regret it if i don’t do it so i’m now in it to avoid feeling bad. either way, since i’m here, may as well make the best out of it.

The weather has turned for the better, at least it aint too cold lest for at night. I have lots of pictures of the road that leads to nowhere, like a never ending journey. and the snow-capped mountains in the distance. have been jogging up and down the highway for the past 3 days simply because the entire place is situated on a junction. and there’s only 2 STRAIGHT roads to choose, both are highways. like thanks. but it feels real good to be running without feeling icky, and one seems to be able to go on forever.. Jogging will never be the same again. =X

The states have a million TV channels to choose from, and we’re hooked on the food network, disney channel, the alaska experiment, grey’s anatomy etc... and we have a supply of DVDs from our very nice neighbours. so basically we’re living good here. All nice and warm in the trailer with heaters, electricity, water supply, kitchen equipment and such, and a comfy comfy bed. so it’s no wonder we sleep early every night.

Memorial Day Weekend

skip lunch today coz i thought to myself “joanna han, skip your lunch today coz you din work and if you keep eating the food they cooked, you’ll get FAT. go and eat a healthy bowl of cereal!” and so i dig into a healthy bowl of whole gain cereal with low fat milk.

wanted to jog today, but when i jumped off my bunker today, my calf gave way and i fell. so i decided not to strain a over-worked calf (from all the climbing up & down the damn bunker).
i strutted around the trailer slowly doing stuff that i can’t remember for almost 2 hours after-which i walked over to the free wifi & did some email checking which i gave up before the laptop battery died, coz the connection is slow & bad today.

after near to 2 hours of internet-ing, i felt hungry so i pop over to Three Bears wanting to buy beef jerky till i saw the price USD7.85. Instead i bought a Multigrain chips (USD6.85, not that cheap but definitely healthier) and a small takeaway box of cut fruits (USD2.99, watermelon and honeydew). what a healthy day~!

oh about the heading of today’s entry. well today is the beginning of the jolly good Memorial Day Weekend, where every where in United States is remembering the war heroes and having SHOPPING SALES (ironic huh?!)... and here i am sitting on my double decker bed ON MY OFF DAY, typing this entry for you all to read and perhaps laugh at my misery. WHY you should ask.. well in this god-forsaken little junction-town, there is NOTHING TO SHOP FOR.

imagine the pain and frustration when i tune to every channel on TV with every single commercial for the past three days going “Memorial Day Sale, enjoy the weekend at MACY’s/OLD NAVY/LAWES/blahblahblah”. not much of a fun, right? on a positive note, at least i keep my green dollars safe in my pocket~

well, i shouldn’t be complaining much, coz pam & pj are on duty today and (time check 1625) its long past off-duty time so i guessed they din finished their allocated rooms so they are working their ass-off to finish (hey! but it aint all that bad, coz they have 1.5 times pay for OT hours). so when i was on the way to drop our dinner tickets, i met May & company who told me the very thing i had just guessed. premonition-came-true! (yes, i stopped typing after the second paragraph, to walk to the back kitchen to drop the dinner ticket, and yes, i’ll let myself indulge in that salty dinner meal, coz its free~)...(and yes i know, i’m a cheapo)

dinner time & i’m hungry & we need a jog

pulled in to help

nothing much today besides that only i have today off, which i spent most of the time watching TV.

oh i did walked over the the TOK GIFT SHOP which allows us to use their free wifi (don’t ask us why), but the catch is we have to sit outside the shop, out in the cold chilly wind to use it. but still its better then paying USD39.90 per month with 2/3GB limit (there is no unlimited plan over here). it is my first time sitting there so i pretty much want to make sure i wouldn't freeze up while letting the mozzies have a free buffet out of me. so i wore a tee shirt, my trusty thick brown sweater and a free Westmark Tok thick hoodie with the all-NSguys-swear-by-it mozzie repellant applied on my hoodie. with all that amour, i still felt abit cold but gosh.. my fingers were frozen.

went back to the trailer to put back the laptop and take the dinner ticket to the back kitchen. on the way to the kitchen, i was pulled in to help PJ & company coz they are way behind schedule. not their fault or that they are slow, its just impossible for us, noobs, to complete 16 bedrooms each in 8 hours. good thing is, i’m paid for that 2.25 hours of help & we manage to finish the rooms in the nick of time before the guest flock in to the rooms :D

rest time, coz our supposed off day is cancelled to be pulled in to help those on duty tomorrow.

ciao

first off day

our first off day together, so i pretty happy and glad (at least i’m not seeing another toilet bowl for the day). checked my schedule, i’ll be having three consecutive off so i can sleep in as late as i want, SWEET~

for brunch, we got a healthy sandwich with little mayo (did we mentioned before that mayo is another condiment but for sandwiches which also seem to be free) & a hot piping broccoli chowder, which cools tremendously fast when we walked outside to eat but anyway it taste real GOOD~ never will i shun away from this veggie chowder.

walked around after brunch. we picked a direction and walked without aim & purpose for very long (at least i felt it was long). in the end we made a U-turn for the park coz there is nothing much to see in our direction. pretty dumb but at least the air is good though its cold.

at the park, we played basketball. gosh... after just three leaps for the hoop, i felt tired. quite a lousy lung i have. PJ & I enjoyed the short workout with pam standing aside not wanting to touch the basketball we found lying beside the court.(this is my guess:P) next we played swing.

walking back to Westmark, we decided to pop into Grizzly Grumps restaurant to see what’s in their menu. who would know that Pam & PJ would be memorised and bewitched by their small but rich salad bar, and me wanting to order a chef salad simply becoz there is egg. the salad bar is good for multiple trips, so PJ & Pam made sooooo many trips, each time their plates are filled with croutons, strawberries, cherry tomatoes and lettuce etc, that i was worried the chef and server (who were occasionally staring at us) would chase us away. but again the veggies are so sweet, crunchy and tasty that even i who don’t really fancy salads, enjoyed it so much WITHOUT any dressing. oh ya, the eggs are G-o-o-d~!

okay, in the end all we did was eat.

74 beds, bath tubs & toilet bowls

first day at work. record breaking amazing, we’ve never made nor clean 74 beds, bath tubs & toilet bowls in one day through our whole 22 years life-span (21 for pam).

how dirty... how about a hotel abandon during the autumn & winter months and we arriving after 6 months to clean, wipe & dust, dirt, stains (TOILET BOWEL STAIN) & poor-old-frozen-to-death insects.

oh to top the record, in a temperature of 35 Fahrenheit (2°C) cold windy outdoor environment, we wore a Westmark Tok tee shirt & a super thin wind-breaker, that fails its duties to stop the icy colds wind from contacting our skin, while doing the above mentioned.

lunch & dinner was the saltiest food we have ever eaten. salt is like the only condiment they have and its free. and i was telling pam that after all this, i might have to go for a body check-up when we return back.

end of the day, the results are:
- wind cut & burnt on all six poor sore hands
pale, cracked & chapped lips
a over worked kidney (from all that salt)
missing our good old hawker food that we once complaint its either too oily or salty
AND our dear ol’ mom cooking

ps: that is a photo of a dead mozzie.

Pit Stop: Fairbanks

Our Plan:
To walk around Fairbanks, see the town, experience the Alaska aura and locate Beversports to get a pair of hiking shoe.

Reality checked:
4 hrs flight to Taipei + 3 hrs transit time +
11 hrs flight to Seattle + 16 hrs transit time +
3.5 hrs domestic flight to Fairbanks + 1/2 hrs bus ride
= 38 “sleepless” hrs

therefore,
38 “sleepless” hrs = three body systems crashing

hence,
all plan was cancelled for the sake of good ol’ Zzzzzz.

seattle.seattle.seattle

welcome to pam’s homework essay. apparently im in charge of recording this leg. so much for democracy. FINE. haha.
touchdown happened at around 6pm. WHEE!!... NOT. ohmygosh. it took us TWO HOURS to clear customs at SEA. *faints* and we thought the causeway immigration checkpoints were most definitely the ultimate. so lets see, by the time we got to the baggage carousel, it’s 8-ish. 3 pple lugging a grand total of nine bags looking for the transfer counter... not a very glam sight...so anyways, draggy stuff, ill fast-fwd a little bit.

met a nice lady at the transfer counter who happened to be knocking off... she kindly led us to the place to store our handcarry for the night (at a price, of course) and TOLD us to get out of the airport and go downtown because... TGIF!(in seattle pple... i know the title says saturday. TSK.)

haha. anyways,we caught the last public bus into town from the airport. a 45 minute ride.
HAHAHA. dear jo-jie sat next to a real chatty guy ( and i mean REAL CHATTY...haha the uncle reminded me of de vil’s lanky right-hand man with his cap and all). when he found out that we were en route to a summer stint in Alaska, he told us that he made 60 grand pulling huge alaskan crabs apart the last time he was there. SIXTY.GRAND. T-T i want. (then thinks of Deadliest Catch and *shudders*)
ok, i digress...i should just stick to the main points- getting on the bus was the easy part. we didnt know where to get off!!! -_-’’’ and it sure did not help that we were 3 girls travelling on the public bus at nine plus at night. oh well, we decided that our ‘get off’ strategy would be... to hop off when most passengers were alighting. (our parents should not be reading this. we have a separate set of entries that are...easier on the heart. HAHA) SOMEHOW we thought we saw something that looked like a ‘townsquare’ and we just got off. YAY.

geography lessons finally paid off. we figured our our location on a really cartoony-not-to-scale-AT-ALL map and just wandered around. if u are thinking, how nice and romantic: ala sleepless in seattle and all, i hate to break it to you, but everything was CLOSED at around 10. (ok, so we should have found out from the nice lady where exactly in seattle we would find life at 10pm..zz) stab me. argh. thank goodness we still managed to buy hot coffee at Starbucks to thaw about 10% of our poor selves.

im rambling. again. zz. in short, we were cold first, upset that we aint doing no shopping, and then hungry. in that order. barnes and nobles was just closing, but we managed to find out about a grub house called The Hurricane that would still be open. utterly lost, and looking everybit the lost tourist. a guy with a hoodie approached us. (think wentworth miller in Prison Break. im serious.) ermmm because this blog wouldnt be much fun if i were to describe what followed (since a written account wouldnt do the episode justice AT ALL) do remember to find out what happened, from the respective pple when we get back. HAHA. im evil this way.

i will tell u though, we shared some cheesy pasta thing, some t-rex worthy red-meat and rich creamy soup at The Hurricane. ta-da our first contact with authentic american fare. did i mention that oil and salt are free too, aside from freedom of speech? HAHAH excuse lame pam.

lets skip on to getting ourselves back to the airport to sit out the next seven hours in an EMPTY AIRPORT. T-T T-T. scary trip on the public bus back to the airport. (again, ask your respective friend, or friends for details... *insert pam’s evil laugh here*) we were BORED.TO.TEARS. had to resort to playing cheng-yu games can!!?!?!? haha but it’s good that somehow the three of us are on the same frequency. so the seven hours were all good.

finally, as SEA woke, we claimed our bags and checked in. had to kill another FOUR hours in their equivalent of ‘Changi-DFS’ section. since we didnt sleep at all, i imagine more than 1 or 2 fresh looking locals thinking that we really looked like hell. haha. nvm! 7 going on 8am. BREAKFAST TIME! haha (fyi, feeding times are of great importance to the three pple you are reading about, just because there is nothing much that occupies our brains here.) we had yummy Wendy’s biscuits for breakie. it’s not what you think it is. not o.O-biscuit?!?!?, biscuits. but bread-replacements-in-an-egg-macmuffin-biscuit, biscuits. HAHA i hope u figure that one out.(*hint hint clue clue: see picture above SATURDAY 10 MAY 2008. in pam’s hand*)

im obviously out-writing my welcome. HA. so in a nutshell. that we were stuck in SEA for a LONG time is all you need to take away from this entry...PLUS the fact that pam thinks that she is really lucky to be travelling with 2 great friends; i cannot think of 2 better pple to be stuck in an airport with. really. hyak hyak.

i guess that’s the end of my essay. im sorry you had to sit through that... hahah maybe i wont have to do anymore homework thanks to the failure of this entry is what im hoping. HA.

pam.over and out.
